The Making of an Olympic Sex Symbol

AFTER finishing three hours of laps, sprints and weighted strokes at the University of Florida’s Olympic-size pool here, Ryan Lochte, the record-setting, gold medal-winning swimmer, was showing the briefest glimmer of fatigue.

“I just want to be done,” he said on the drive to a nearby Hilton, steering his white Range Rover with his knee, sitting far down in the bucket seats, blasting Lil Wayne. He was to spend hours shooting a commercial for a cellphone company, posing shirtless on a locker room set. Tomorrow would bring a double session of exhausting practices to rack up the 70,000 meters he swims weekly in preparation for the London Olympics next month. And then more shoots, more training, a grueling schedule of never-ending shirtlessness.

Olympic hopeful Ryan Lochte to Vogue: ‘I’m a coach’s nightmare’

With the London Olympics less than 75 days away, Vogue celebrated by including some of America’s top athletes in the pages of their June issue.

Swimmer Ryan Lochte has already brought home 6 Olympic medals (3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze), and is hoping to aim for even more in London. Don’t worry, everyone — his dangerous extracurriculars won’t get in the way: “I’m always bruising and scraping things playing basketball and skateboarding,” he told Vogue writer Robert Sullivan. “I’m pretty much a coach’s nightmare.”

Swimming world champion, 26, dies in Arizona

A 26-year-old world champion swimmer who was one of Norway’s top medal hopes for the London Olympics died of apparent cardiac arrest after collapsing Monday night in the shower of his Flagstaff, Ariz., hotel room.

Alexander Dale Oen, who earned a silver medal at the 2008Beijing Olympics for the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, was in Flagstaff with the Norwegian Olympic Swim team for high altitude training at the Wall Aquatic Center at Northern Arizona University.

Dale Oen had golfed with his roommates Monday afternoon, and they had returned to their hotel, where Dale Oen took a shower, according to the Flagstaff Police Department.

A roommate told police he became concerned when Dale Oen was in the shower longer than usual. The roommates broke into the bathroom when Dale Oen didn’t respond, police said.

Roommates found Dale Oen unresponsive in the shower, police said.

The team’s doctor was called to the room and local emergency medical crews tried to resuscitate him. Dale Oen was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say they see no immediate evidence of foul play.

Friends and family are mourning the loss of a Minnesota teen who jumped to his death last Sunday after allegedly being tormented by classmates for being gay.

As the Rochester Post-Bulletin is reporting, 17-year-old Jay ‘Corey’ Jones of Rochester, Minn. had suffered severe depression after being bullied for a number of years. Frat bros in red stilettos

Normally, there’s nothing so shocking about men wearing high heels (it’s more surprising not to see stilettos on Drag Race, after all) — but, as CNN reports, for a group of fraternity brothers at Western Kentucky University, this week marked a first. The guys strut their stuff for a mile across campus wearing red heels as part of the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes campaign.

University Of California Freshmen May Be Asked To Declare Sexual Orientation

In addition to identifying their race, gender and ethnicity, incoming college freshmen at University of California schools may also be asked to identify their sexual orientation. If a new proposal is passed, high school seniors will be asked to check a new box — one that declares whether they are gay, straight, bi or transgender — upon acceptance of their admissions offer.

ABC News reports that the proposal, initiated by the University of California Academic Senate, would add an extra question to the statement of intent that students sign when they decide to attend the university.

Boys Swimming on Girls Teams Find Success, Then Draw Jeers

During his first-period broadcast Monday, the Norwood High athletic director Brian McDonough congratulated Will Higgins for breaking the meet record in the 50-yard freestyle the previous day at the Massachusetts South Division fall swimming and diving championships.

McDonough chose not to mention that it was a girls swimming championship.

“I didn’t want to get into that,” he said.

Anthony Rodriguez, another boy on the Norwood girls team, heard a grace note in McDonough’s omission.

University of Maryland swimmers struggle to save their program from elimination

At first, all Megan Lafferty wanted to do was lie on her bed in the dark. Like all of her teammates, she was devastated when Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson informed them last November that the university planned to drop its men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams.

Instead, Lafferty threw herself into her junior season for the Terrapins with the same determination she had used to throw herself into the pool for thousands of pre-dawn workouts since she was 7 years old.
