Representing 24 percent of broadcast primetime scripted and reality shows last season, these series garnered 28 percent of broadcast primetime TV viewing and 22 percent of ad dollars, according to Nielsen data. According to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the presence of regularly-appearing LGBT characters accounted for 3.9 percent of all scripted series regular characters during the 2010-2011 season, reaching a record high.

Apple’s rumored project to build a prototype television that woud offer a cohesive internet-connected TV experience with iCloud features is reportedly being headed up by Jeff Robbin, reports Bloomberg.

Robbin is the engineer who is responsible for building iTunes out of the bits and pieces of SoundJam MP, which Apple purchased in 2000 to aid it in developing a jukebox software to allow users to purchase legal music and, eventually, load it onto their iPods.

Lauren Myracle Withdraws From National Book Awards As The Debacle Continues

It’s one embarrassment after another for this year’s National Book Awards.

First, they name the wrong book in the shortlist for the Young People’s Literature award, announcing “Shine” by Lauren Myracle as a nominee instead of “Chime” by Franny Billingsley.

Soon after the announcement, they put out a statement adding “Chime” to the shortlist, saying that there would be six titles instead of five in that category this year.

Today, one week after that debacle, Lauren Myracle has withdrawn her book from the awards, citing pressure from the National Book Foundation, who manage the awards, as her reason for doing so.

Myracle, whose book is about the discrimination of gay youth in schools, voiced her support for the shortlisted authors, and added that “When I received the initial call about Shine being a finalist, I was humbled and honored to be in the company of such amazing authors.”

entrepreneurshipEDGE: Lead Workshop 2011

http://entrepreneurshipedge.org/leadership/lead

Each year, we focus on a specific campaign and then administer a workshop – called the Lead Workshop – that focuses on that campaign while also teaching leadership and community activism skills.

In 2011, we are focusing on bullying against LGBT youth and suicides, and thus aim to raise awareness of the It Gets Better Project.  The Lead Workshop takes place in cities in LGBT Centers (as we will be working on a LGBT-focused campaign) or fun and workshop-friendly places throughout the United States and develops each participant’s leadership and community activism skills through training and practical experience – with the participants’ work on the It Gets Better Project – and so, participants will use social media skills learned to help generate awareness and support for it.

10 Races to Watch this Election Day

The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund today announced its list of “10 Races to Watch” for 2011. Each of the candidates on the list faces a general election November 8.

“These are exciting and even historic races,” said Shawn Werner, the Victory Fund’s director of campaign services. “In each case a victory would mean a real step forward for a local LGBT community, and some of these will be very competitive up until Election Day.”

“You hear some call 2011 an ‘off year’ for politics, but that’s wrong.  We’ve endorsed 75 candidates this year, largely in municipal elections.  These local races are incredibly important.  We don’t just win equality nationally or even statewide.  We win it every day, city by city and town by town,” said Werner.

Susan Sarandon Brands Pope Benedict a ‘Nazi’

Susan Sarandon may have worn a nun’s habit in “Dead Man Walking,” but she’s no fan of Pope Benedict XVI.

Appearing alongside actor Bob Balaban at the Bay Street Theater in Long Island, the Oscar-winning actress branded the head of the Catholic Church a “Nazi,” Newsday reports.

THR’s fourth annual list shines a spotlight on the 50 most influential — and valuable — creative chiefs writing, producing and redefining television.

For better or worse, 2011 will go down as the Year of the Showrunner. It all began with Chuck Lorre becoming a household name for all the wrong reasons. Then there was Mad Men’s Matthew Weiner making waves during the showrunner’s painful, prolonged negotiations with the network he put on the map. The summer saw film auteur Frank Darabont make a stormy exit from his AMC smash hit The Walking Dead and then be replaced by The Shield veteran Glen Mazzara. But the news wasn’t all negative. Emmy night awarded comedy kings Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd more gold for Modern Family, and that Mad Men guy earned a redemptive trophy for his collection. Plus, the fall saw the return of such established veterans as Howard Gordon (Homeland), Michael Patrick King (2 Broke Girls) and Neal Baer (A Gifted Man), proving that reinvention is a showrunner’s most powerful tool. Here, THR profiles the men and women who make TV’s toughest gig look damn good.

METHODOLOGY: Selections for The Hollywood Reporter’s fourth annual list of the top showrunners are based on the following criteria:

1. Direct responsibility for the day-to-day creative output of a scripted TV show that has aired for at least one full season (unless he or she also had another show on the air).
2. How prolific the showrunner is: Those with more shows on the air were more likely to be included.
3. Nielsen ratings, especially relative to other shows on the same network.
4. Emmy attention and critical praise.
5. Professionalism and reputation among studio and network executives.
