‘Scream’ Producer Cathy Konrad Signs First-Look Deal With Fisher Stevens’ Insurgent Media  |  Hollywood Reporter  |  August 5, 2016
Veteran film and TV producer Cathy Konrad — behind the first three Scream titles and its recent TV adaptation for MTV — has signed a first-look deal with Insurgent Media, the production house headed by Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate Fisher Stevens.

Announced on Friday, the first project to be developed under the deal is Cicada 3301, an espionage TV thriller based on the real-life global code-breaking phenomenon that has, since 2012, posted puzzles online with the reported aim of recruit “highly intelligent individuals.” Konrad will produce alongside Ezna Sands and Ashley Richardson for Insurgent Media.

“I have been fortunate in my career to work with partners who share my taste and passion for both genre and character stories,” said Konrad. “While working with the Insurgent team, it has become clear, very quickly, that we share a similar aesthetic and sensibility for storytelling, and that we are in sync with regards to the talent we want to be in business with and support creatively.”

Insurgent, based in New York and Los Angeles, was behind the 2014 Netflix environmental documentary Mission Blue.

Weinsteins Pay to Settle Producer Cathy Konrad’s ‘Scream 4’ Lawsuit (Exclusive)  |  Hollywood Reporter  |  April 5, 2011
Scream 4 will hit theaters April 15 without the specter of a lawsuit hovering over the horror sequel. Distributor the Weinstein Co. has paid to settle a $3 million claim filed by producer Cathy Konrad, who alleged she was booted from the fourth installment of the franchise after it was developed behind her back.

Terms of the settlement, which was reached a few months ago but has gone unreported until now, have not been disclosed. However, sources tell THR that Konrad is getting a cash payment from TWC and a very small portion of the back end on the film.

We broke the news last May that Konrad and her Cat Entertainment had sued in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming she was responsible for the development of the lucrative Scream franchise and was entitled to a first opportunity to produce any sequels on the same financial terms as Scream 3, for which she received $550,000 pay-or-play plus $100,000 bonuses for domestic boxoffice targets of $75 million, $100 million, $110 million and $125 million.

Konrad claimed she had planned to be involved in the fourth film, directed by Wes Craven, but she learned from media reports that TWC was planning to restart the horror series and release another installment in 2011 without including her.

The suit alleged that the Weinsteins booted her based on the “false pretext” that her producing services were to be exclusive to the project, which she says was not a requirement on Scream 3. She claimed that the Weinsteins actually excluded her to lower costs and to hire Craven’s wife instead of Konrad.TWC attorney Bert Fieldsdenied the allegations at the time.

Fields and Konrad’s attorney declined to comment on the settlement.

‘Drop Dead Diva’ Creator Set to Debut New Show, ‘Notorious’  |  NBCNews  |  Sept 22, 2016
When Josh Berman was a law student, he found himself craving a creative outlet. So eventually, he ended up spending his days writing legal briefs and his nights writing TV scripts.

“I basically realized a TV script is almost structured like a legal brief in some ways and yet you have all the creative elements. You don’t have to stick to the rules,” Berman told NBC OUT.

Berman, who has written and produced hit television shows including “Bones,” “CSI” and “Drop Dead Diva,” is ready to debut his latest project — ABC’s new drama “Notorious.” And once again, he’ll be able to mix his legal background and his creative cravings.

“Notorious,” which Berman created with Allie Hagan, examines the relationship between the media and criminal law, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the intersection. The drama centers on a television producer and an attorney — characters based on “Larry King Live” producer Wendy Walker and defense attorney Mark Geragos.

To Berman, meeting Walker and Geragos made it clear “Notorious” was his next project. “Once I heard their stories, I realized it opened up a whole new world of stories in me and I left that meeting knowing I had to write ‘Notorious.'”

In a television landscape full of crime procedurals, Berman sees “Notorious” as an opportunity to add something special, because it is not from the perspective of those at the crime scene.

“This show gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at a real life case, and ‘Notorious’ is inspired by real stories, and if you are a news geek, crime junkie or legal junkie you will see similar types of stories told in a very different and grounded way,” Berman told NBC OUT.

Piper Perabo and Daniel Sunjata were chosen to lead the cast as TV producer Julia George and defense attorney Jake Gregorian, respectively.

“Daniel Sunjata was the first choice for the role,” Berman said. “He is the perfect combination of head and heart.”

“When we cast the role of Julia we did not know Piper Perabo was available. I really wanted to work with her and we kept telling people we wanted a ‘Piper Perabo type’ and sure enough she read the script and wanted to do it,” he added.

The cast is rounded out by Kate Jennings Grant, Ryan Guzman, Aimee Teegarden, Sepideh Moafi, J. August Richards and Kevin Zegers.

“All of our actors really popped on screen and they tested really well,” Berman said. “The fun now is we have an entire series to allow the actors to shine.”

One thing viewers can look forward to is the relationship between Teegarden and Guzman’s characters. Teegarden’s character is an employee at Jake’s firm, while Guzman plays the newest hire on Julia’s team who is out to prove himself.

“They have incredible chemistry together, they like each other so much in real life and it is a joy to write for them,” Berman added.

As a gay man, Berman believes LGBTQ storytelling is important and has included LGBTQ storylines in past productions — something he will continue on “Notorious.”

“There is an LGBTQ character among our cast, and it is not obvious in the pilot, and it is something that may come out in an unexpected way over the course of the first season,” Berman explained.

“Notorious” will premiere September 22 and Berman is excited to see how it is received. “It is going to subvert expectations, keep people on the edge of their seats and it is a new way to tell stories that will engage the viewer,” he concluded.

Josh Berman Inks New Overall Deal At Sony  |  Deadline  |  Apr 22, 2014

EXCLUSIVE: Josh Berman tenure at Sony Pictures Television will be crossing the decade mark with a fourth consecutive overall deal. Under the new, three-year pact, Berman continues as executive producer and showrunner of Sony TV’s Lifetime series Dead Drop Diva. He created the dramedy, now in its sixth and final season, under his first overall pact at the studio. He also will continue to develop projects for network and cable. Berman began his career as a junior writer on the first season of CBS’ CSI. He remained on the long-running procedural for six years, rising to executive producer. He went on to create the Fox drama Vanished and spent four years on the network’s veteran procedural Bones. While at Sony TV, Berman, repped by CAA and attorney Ken Richman, also co-created and executive produced the Fox drama Mob Doctor.

Interview with Sean Sorensen  |  The Science & Entertainment Exchange  |  Feb 6, 2013
Have you ever heard of Sealand? Hollywood writer and producer Sean Sorensen sure has! Sean chats with us this week about what other great ideas he has up his sleeve and his advice for making it in Hollywood.
Tell us about your background. Where are you from, and what did you want to do when you grew up?
I grew up in Orange County, California. I wanted to be an astronaut until I realized how much math was involved.
What was your first job in Hollywood and how did you get it?
I optioned the life rights to the family that founded Sealand, the smallest country in the world. I sold the story to Warner Bros. in 2003, wrote the script, and was hired as executive producer. That movie never got made, but I learned a ton from that experience.
What advice do you have for the next generation of young adults who want to break into the business?
I would tell them they have better luck breaking into a bank. But so what – if you are passionate about it, make it happen. Napoleon said, “If you commence to take Vienna, take Vienna.” I think getting ahead in this business requires an absolute narrow-mindedness. Throw away Plan B. Turn thought into action. Become the mantra, “this is going to happen,” and do everything it takes to realize your dreams.
Can you give us some insight into the creative process? What is the most difficult part of your job?
A surprising and frustrating percentage of my day is reminding other people to do what they said they were going to do, but I am pretty sure that is true with every business. Everyone’s creative process is different; just find out what works for you and assume that’s the right way to do it.
What does a typical work day look like?
I am super light-sensitive, so I get up around 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. and immediately read a script and answer e-mails. So by the time I am in the office, I have already got a good head start on my day. The rest of the day is calls, meetings, e-mails, writing treatments, and, of course, reminding people to do what they said they were going to do.
How did you become involved with The Exchange? What are your thoughts about the program? Do you have a most memorable moment?
I met Rick Loverd during a lunch with writer Max Borenstein at Comic-Con 2012 and The Exchange has quickly become one of my favorite things of the year! My favorite moment has to be brainstorming ideas with Dr. Todd Coleman and Dr. Ricardo Gil de Costa for this television series we sold a few months ago. Todd and Ricardo are so genial, brilliant, and just downright cool … not to mention they made significant contributions to the scientific integrity of our show.
Other highlights of The Exchange include touring the nuclear submarine USS Albuquerque and the missile destroyer USS Stockdale with the U.S. Navy in San Diego, as well as visiting the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Dr. Coleman and Dr. De Costa’s laboratories at Salk Institute.
There has also been meetings with 4-star generals, panels with astronauts … basically, anything The Exchange does is super awesome and I feel lucky to be included.
What memory or experience stands out as a turning point early in your career?
Obviously, selling my first project was a big deal because suddenly, I was not just dreaming anymore. But segueing a few years later from screenwriter to executive was a major turning point. The writing process is typically so isolated and sedentary whereas producing allows me to showcase some of my natural abilities … like weeping, shouting, and begging.
What were your favorite movies and television shows when you were growing up?
I saw Star Wars when I was five years old and remember leaving the theater wanting to be Han Solo. Shortly thereafter, my mother married a religious zealot and, for the most part, radio, television, and movies became forbidden. Of course, that only made me want them more and here we are.
Is there anything that we should have asked, but did not? Anything else you would like to add?
Years ago, my beloved grandfather cut down a holly tree on his property. As a woodworking hobbyist, he intended to carve the holly wood into a set of chess pieces. The gnarled twisted stump laid in his front yard as he regaled me with his vivid dreams for this amazing chess set. He saw this chess set so clearly in his mind. For more than a dozen years, he made measurements, sketches, and plans, but never got around to carving the chess pieces. Eventually, he passed away and one of my first actions upon his death was to heft that stump into the garbage.
Thought is nothing. Action is everything.

Coen Brothers to Write and Direct Their First-Ever TV Series, ‘Buster Scruggs’  |  Variety  |  January 10, 2017

Joel and Ethan Coen are the latest auteurs moving into television, with a new event anthology set in the Old West.

Annapurna Television is partnering with the Coen brothers on a limited series Western called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” Sources tell Variety that Annapurna intends to pursue an innovative approach that could combine television and theatrical.

Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the script from an original idea and will direct the project.

The Coens will produce “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” through their Mike Zoss Productions label. Megan Ellison and Annapurna Television’s president of television, Sue Naegle, will serve as executive producers.

“We are very excited to be working with Megan and Sue on this project,” the Coen brothers said in a statement to Variety.

It’s still unclear how theatrical distribution could play a part in the project, but the intent is to shoot “Buster Scruggs” as a miniseries. According to sources, the scope of the project seemed too challenging to be covered in one feature film.

The idea is similar to Imagine Entertainment’s adaptation of the “The Dark Tower” series. Imagine partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard had planned to do something over both theatrical and television, but ended up sticking with one feature film, which Sony will release later this year.

Plot details of “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” are unknown, though it will intertwine six different story lines. The brothers are no strangers to the genre, with “True Grit” and “No Country for Old Men” on their resume.

The brothers join a list of elite directors who have crossed over to television to further develop stories that could not make it to the big screen. Among many others, David O. Russell is currently working on a series for Amazon starring Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro, and J.J. Abrams is writing and directing a limited series with Meryl Streep that is currently being shopped.

The Coens most recently wrote and directed “Hail, Caesar!” and also penned the script for George Clooney’s next directorial effort, “Suburbicon.” They are repped by UTA.

After making a mark in the film industry, Annapurna is now making strides in television and is in pre-production on a limited series adaptation of the novel “Today Will Be Different” by Maria Semple, with Julia Roberts attached to star.

Annapurna Pictures Launches TV Division Headed By Former HBO Executive Sue Naegle  |  Deadline  |  September 27, 2016
Annapurna Pictures has launched Annapurna Television, a production that will be led by former HBO president of entertainment Sue Naegle. She recently ended a production deal at the network that followed her executive stint.

Annapurna’s new division will focus on building out the label’s TV slate for broadcast, cable and digital platforms. Naegle will run the new enterprise alongside Annapurna founder Megan Ellison and will spearhead Annapurna’s TV production and development, focusing on projects that align with the company’s brand of smart and original programming in collaboration with top creative voices.

Prior to Annapurna, Naegle led her own television and film production company, Naegle Ink, where she serves as an EP on Robert Kirkman’s Cinemax series Outcast. In addition, Naegle has several projects in development with HBO and other cable networks. Various projects that Naegle Ink has in development will segue to Annapurna, and the label’s SVP Kit Giordano and VP Ali Krug will join Naegle at Annapurna. One particular project that Annapurna is shepherding for Epix centers on the intersecting lives of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, written by Angela Robinson and Alex Kondracke.

During her run as HBO’s entertainment president, Naegle was instrumental in shepherding such Emmy-winning series as Game of Thrones, Veep and Boardwalk Empire along with True Blood, Tremé, Eastbound & Down, Enlightened and Girls.

“We are thrilled to further expand our television business and continue our commitment to all forms of storytelling,” Ellison said in a statement. “I could not be more excited to have the opportunity to work with and learn from Sue Naegle. She has such a passion and understanding of this medium, and has truly approached it from every angle. As I’ve gotten to know Sue, not only is she brilliant with an astonishing expertise both creatively and for the business, but also, she’s an incredible person to invite into this close-knit group of individuals over here at Annapurna. Her track record speaks for itself and her values could not be more aligned with our goals as a company.”

Said Naegle: “I am so excited to join Annapurna and help spearhead the exciting future of Annapurna Television. Annapurna is a company that has been unwavering in their commitment to building distinctive and bold programming in a time of unprecedented production. Whether I’ve been an agent, network president or producer, defending and nurturing innovative, compelling narratives and aesthetic excellence has been my mission and privilege. I’m so thrilled to find partners like Megan and her incredible team that share the same core philosophy, and I hope that this alliance will yield indelible television shows that reflect and challenge our culture.”

“’Genius’ is perfectly emblematic of our vision to create premium, distinctive and highly entertaining content that fits the National Geographic brand,” said National Geographic Channels CEO Courteney Monroe, who has recently expressed her desire to break NatGeo into the scripted space.

Pink will serve as an exec producer with Howard, Grazer, Francie Calfo, Gigi Pritzker, Rachel Shane, Sam Sokolow and Jeff Cooney. Melissa Rucker and Anna Culp are co-exec producers. A showrunner is expected to be announced soon.

“We couldn’t be happier to be working with Imagine and OddLot to bring our spirit of creative adventure and passion for great storytelling to NatGeo as they embark on their first scripted series. And to have Ron direct the first episode is incredibly exciting,” commented Fox 21 Television Studios president Bert Salke. “’Genius’ is a franchise with infinite possibilities. We think this installment that tells the fascinating backstory of the man who articulated the theory of relativity is just the beginning of a long and successful partnership between our companies.”

Howard commented, “Having already worked with National Geographic on ‘Breakthrough’ and currently in production on ‘Mars’— our exciting unscripted and scripted hybrid series that tells of our journey to colonize Mars — I look forward to their support as we tell this ambitious but intimate and revealing human story behind Einstein’s scientific brilliance. I hope that his story, as well as those of other geniuses, will both entertain and inspire the next generation of Einsteins.”

“We have been patient in our search for the perfect partners to help bring Walter Isaacson’s incredible book on Einstein to life in a unique, thought-provoking and entertaining way,” OddLot’s Pritzker said. “After cultivating the project for many years, we are ecstatic that ‘Genius’ will be OddLot’s first foray into television and that this remarkable story will be realized with Ron Howard at the helm and with the support of our great partners at NatGeo, FOX 21 TVS, Imagine and EUE/Sokolow.”

While “Genius” is the first scripted series to be greenlit at NatGeo, the cable net is developing a slew of scripted projects from high-profile talent including Scott Rudin. In December, Monroe brought on exec Carolyn Bernstein to head scripted programming.

Production is slated to begin this summer in Prague with “Genius” eyeing a spring 2017 premiere. The series will debut in 171 countries and in 45 languages.

Stephen King’s ‘The Mist’ Gets Spike Pilot Order  |  Variety  |  Feb 25, 2016
Spike has ordered a pilot for “The Mist,” based on the classic Stephen King novella, Variety has learned.

The scripted drama, which hails from Dimension Television, tells a harrowing story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town and creates immense havoc.  Christian Torpe will executive produce. Torpe created “Rita” in Denmark, now finishing its fourth season, and has developed programming for both Showtime and AMC.

“We are thrilled to join forces with the incredibly creative Christian Torpe and Dimension Films to develop Stephen King’s enthralling novella to a compelling series unlike anything else on television,” said Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series, Spike.

“We are excited to be in business with Spike on their first scripted production pilot and working with the very talented Christian Torpe to further explore Stephen King’s classic novella and bring this riveting series to television audiences,” said Bob Weinstein, Co-Chariman of The Weinstein Company.

Levy, Ted Gold, SVP, Scripted Original Series, and Lauren Ruggiero, Senior Director, Scripted Programming will oversee the project.

‘The Mist’ TV Series Emerges From Dimension & Scribe Christian Torpe  |  Deadline  |  Sept 16, 2015
The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Television is developing a TV series based on The Mist, first a Stephen King novella and then a 2007 MGM film directed by Frank Darabont. The project, which Dimension says is moving forward with King’s blessing, is from writer Christian Torpe, who created the Danish series Rita which is now finishing its fourth season.

The series will tell an original story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town but contains limitless havoc. From psychological terrors to otherworldly creatures, the mist causes the town residents’ darkest demons to appear forcing them to battle the supernatural event and, more importantly, each other.

“The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films. “With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.”

Dimension TV’s Megan Spanjian, Matthew Signer and Keith Levine will oversee the project.

TWC has been active on the TV front, most recently mining the Toronto Film Festival to pick up U.S. rights to the crime drama Trapped, an Icelandic TV series created by Everest director Baltasar Kormakur. Then today, it revealed that it has come aboard to snag North American rights to Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes’ Doctor Thorne, a three-part drama for ITV.

Torpe is repped by ICM Partners and Principal Entertainment LA.

Bob Compton VRP

Robert “Bob” Compton has produced 11 documentary films, including Oscar nominated for best documentary Cartel Land, Oscar nominated for best original song The Hunting Ground and Rich Hill, winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize. His film Sole of a Hustla was an official selection of the American Black Film Festival 2011. He has produced six films exploring K-12 education around the world, including Two Million Minutes and The Finland Phenomenon. Along with Dr. Tony Wagner at Harvard University, he authored the book Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and had a successful career as high-tech venture capitalist before becoming a filmmaker.

In his own words:
My name is Robert Compton, but my friends call me Bob. I am glad to have lived during such interesting times. I have a wide range of interests and I hope that you and I can learn something from each other.

With an undergraduate liberal arts degree, I began my career at the IBM Corporation initially as a systems engineer, and later as a sales representative selling mainframe computer systems. I left IBM to continue my education at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business where I received my Masters in Business Administration.

After Harvard, I entered the venture capital industry landing a position at First Chicago Venture Capital. From there, I moved to Indiana where I served as a general partner at CID Equity Partners from 1987 to 1997. My first deal was help-desk software developer Software Artistry, which went public in 1995 and was acquired two years later by IBM for about $200 Million. My subsequent investments included Interactive Intelligence, Allscripts and ExactTarget – all of which had successful public offerings.

I left the venture business to become President and Chief Operating Officer of Sofamor Danek Group, Inc., which at the time was the world’s largest supplier of implants, computer-assisted surgery products, and biologics for spinal surgery. Medtronic acquired Sofamor Danek Group, Inc. in January 1999 for $3.7 billion. I have served on numerous corporate Boards of Directors in an array of industries and have been the lead investor in over 20 businesses, six of which have had successful public offerings.

After traveling to India in 2005, I was inspired to create the documentary Two Million Minutes: A Global Examination to take a deeper look at how the three superpowers of the 21st Century-China, India and the United States are preparing their students for the future. My subsequent 7 films have explored entrepreneurship and education around the world, including my most recent film The Finland Phenomenon: Inside the World’s Most Surprising School System.

Despite the relative decline of American education, the decades ahead can be ones of prosperity and economic growth, provided the American people embrace the 21st Century. I remain an optimist about America. We have always risen to every challenge and I believe the American people will meet this one with characteristic ingenuity and innovation.

The Sundance Film Festival Audience Award Winning feature film “First Girl I Loved” had its Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday, October 18th and the stars were out at the historic Vista Theatre to celebrate. Jaden Smith showed his support for the film (which is partnered with the It Gets Better Project) along with the film’s stars Brianna Hildebrand (who was just nominated for a Teen Choice Award for playing Negasonic Teenage Warhead in “Deadpool”), Dylan Gelula (best known for “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Pamela Aldon (writer/star of the hit series “Better Things”) and Mateo Arias (from “Disney’s Kickin’ It”). Also on hand were Stephen Kramer Glickman (“Storks”), Rex Lee (“Young And Hungry”), Bex Taylor-Klaus (MTV’s “Scream”), Brec Bassinger, Rachel Sterling, Damian Whitewood, Will Meyers, Stefan Kapicic, Ramona Young and many, many more.

“First Girl I Loved” is being released in conjunction with the It Gets Better Project and with support from Sundance Institute’s Artist Services program. The film, which has played many festivals around the world including Sundance Film Festival (where it won the Audience Award: NEXT, Presented by Adobe) and Outfest, is the story of seventeen-year-old Anne who just fell in love with Sasha, the most popular girl at her public high school. But when Anne tells her best friend Clifton — who has always harbored a secret crush — he does his best to get in the way. The movie stars Dylan Gelula, Brianna Hildebrand, Mateo Arias and Pamela Aldon and is available on demand, iTunes and in theaters. “First Girl I Loved” is currently the #3 best-selling movie listed under Romance on iTunes.
