Emotions have run high since the very first day of Brandon McInerney’s trial for murder. Perhaps that’s because the killing of his gay middle-school classmate Lawrence King was as emotionally jarring as it was appalling. When McInerney, then 14 years old, shot 15-year-old King twice in the back of the head in a school computer lab three years ago, the incident jolted the coastal city of Oxnard, California, thrust two unstable households into the spotlight, and made King a rallying point for the gay community across the nation. The shooting exposed a multitude of sensitive subjects all at once: issues regarding gays, transgender people, bullying, white supremacy, child abuse and school violence came to the surface.

And there were other kinds of baggage. Before proceedings had even begun, almost two months ago, the judge reportedly barred McInerney’s brother from watching the proceedings after he spoke to members of the jury. Since then, former classmates have broken down crying on the witness stand. McInerney’s mother and a teacher cried when the defense displayed a picture of King holding a homecoming dress and smiling, prompting the victim’s father to storm out of the courtroom in disgust. The defense has even tried to disqualify the judge, alleging he was biased in favor of the prosecution.

This fall, we were engaged to fly down to Rome, GA for a master class at Shorter University. In the past, the musical theater program has sponsored many master classes with fantastic writers and we counted ourselves lucky to be among that group.

Shorter, however, has undergone a change in administration and is now making headlines with a new and upsetting policy that requires employees to sign a “lifestyle” pledge that rejects homosexuality, adultery, and premarital sex. After thoroughly researching the issue, we have decided that we cannot go to Shorter and have cancelled our engagement.

OXNARD, Calif. — Hundreds of mourners gathered at a church here on Friday to remember an eighth-grade boy who was shot to death inside a junior high school computer lab by a fellow student in what prosecutors are calling a hate crime.

Some are calling it the ‘license to bully’ bill.  A proposed Tennessee bill is facing some heavy criticism for creating what some believe are loopholes in the state’s current anti-bullying laws for students.

If the Family Action Council of Tennessee has its way, at some point in the near future, a young man can enter his Tennessee high school classroom, stare directly at a gay or lesbian student, and declare loudly for all to hear, “Faggots will all go to hell!”

Richard Swanson has resigned as Tehachapi Unified School District superintendent. The move, effective Wednesday, was made for “personal reasons,” a district official said.

Swanson and his school district have been under fire during the last year for not cracking down on bullying.

Federal officials announced Friday a settlement had been reached with a central California school district where a 13-year-old gay student committed suicide after being subjected to persistent harassment from his classmates.

The mother of a gay teen who took his own life after allegedly being bullied has filed a lawsuit against the boy’s school district.

“The school district did absolutely nothing to help him,” said Wendy Walsh, mother of 13-year-old Seth Walsh.

More than 500 people filled First Baptist Church for the service in Tehachapi, with people sitting and standing in the aisles and all along the back. There was still a line out the door when the service began.

Many who attended were teens saying goodbye to a classmate and friend who took his own life.
Family also spoke about Seth during the service.
