Why Tammy Baldwin Will Win

Can Tammy Baldwin, a proud progressive, become the next U.S. senator from Wisconsin and make history as America’s first openly LGBT senator? Not only can she, but I expect she will.

For Gay Aspiring Politicians, a Workshop on Campaign Strategies

As a gay person running for the City Council in Houston, which already has a lesbian mayor, Josh Verde figured he would have no trouble talking to voters about his sexuality. Then he came here, to a boot camp for openly gay candidates, and promptly flubbed his lines.

ORANGE COUNTY, FL (WESH/NBC) – A former football player and homecoming king is running for office as a woman.

Gina Duncan, 56, filed paper-work to run for Florida’s Orange County Commission earlier this week.

Duncan says being a transgender woman is a part of who she is.

“It’s been a challenge and a very interesting life journey,” Duncan said.

Duncan spent 50 of her years as Gregory Pingston, once known as a star linebacker in Merritt Island, then a husband.

“I was married for 25 years,” Duncan said.

Gregory fathered a son and a daughter before telling his family in 2006 that he was going to undergo surgery to become a woman.

Minnesota Elects First Out Lesbian Native American to State Legislature

Democrat Susan Allen, a Victory Fund-endorsed candidate in a special election for Minnesota’s State House, won the seat with 55.96% of the vote, making her the first out lesbian Native American elected to a state legislature, according to Southwest Minneapolis Patch.

Allen, an experienced tax and tribal law attorney who has lived in the city for the past 14 years, will replace Jeff Hayden who currently represents District 61B in south central Minneapolis.

After Gay Teen’s Suicide, Christian Right Backs ‘License to Bully’

Anti-gay conservatives are working overtime to explain away the suicide of young Jacob Rogers. They dismiss all the name-calling and bullying at his high school. Instead, they claim it was Jacob’s own fault somehow. In its latest radio report, David Fowler’s F.A.C.T. concedes “it’s wrong to bully people because of their sexual practices” but blames Jacob’s death on his own alcohol and drug abuse and eating disorder. According to F.A.C.T., it’s all “the rotten fruit of the all-about-me individualist culture that comes when we deny the existence of God and his image in us.”

For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Groups, 2011 Has Been a Great Legislative Year

Although the court fight over same-sex marriage in California is unresolved, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy groups scored major legislative victories in 2011.

“We passed a ton of bills,” said Rebekah Orr, spokeswoman for Equality California, a group that lobbies for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. “There is an understanding that inequality is real, so it is relatively easy for a number of these bills to be passed.”

Twelve bills backed by Equality California were passed by the Legislature in 2011. Gov. Jerry Brown signed 10 and vetoed 2.
