ESPN Slowly Introducing Online Brand for Women

In its three decades of existence, ESPN has built a vast sports empire that has aimed to attract nearly every slice of the American sports audience, from teenagers to Hispanics to college students to baby boomers. But it has done little to cater to one group that makes up a quarter of its television audience: women.

That is about to change. This fall, the network is gradually introducing espnW, a brand marketed to women that will begin in the spring as a digital presence and could eventually expand to television. Today, it is little more than a Twitter account and a Facebook page, but already the idea has been warmly received by leaders in women’s sports, who have long been pining for news media coverage. ESPN courted an A-list of women’s sports figures at a retreat earlier this month, including executives like Stacey Allaster of the Women’s Tennis Association and star athletes like the softball player Jennie Finch and the snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler.

Michelle Obama: Everybody is ‘praying for us’

MILWAUKEE — Michelle Obama’s East Wing staff suggested she would take it slow once she started campaigning, emphasizing her nonpolitical “mom-in-chief” role and her noncontroversial fight against childhood obesity.

Instead, the first lady made her political presence felt immediately Wednesday, delivering an impassioned and overtly religious pitch for Democrats to defend her husband’s legacy in the midterm elections.

“We got this man in office; we’re all proud of Barack and his accomplishments,” Obama told syndicated radio host Tom Joyner before embarking on a week of campaign events that will take her to Wisconsin, Illinois, Colorado, Washington and California on behalf of endangered Democrats.

“Everybody I know in our communities [is] praying for us,” she said, adopting a religious theme seldom used by her husband — and landing her on top of The Drudge Report, a space she occupied with some regularity two years ago.

A year after FremantleMedia formed a kids television division, and recruited Sander Schwartz away from Warner Bros., the production entity is ready to roll out its first slate of family shows.
At this week’s Mipcom show in Cannes, the company will offer up around a dozen shows, a mix of live-action and animated series that target preschool through high school viewers.

“My Babysitter’s a Vampire,” based on the popular kidlit series, is getting the biggest push, with the live-action comedy series bowing as a feature on Oct. 9, in Canada, before being spun off as a series next year as a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” for the 9- to 14-year-old set. Fresh TV developed the project with Teletoon Canada. FME retains the exclusive distribution and licensing rights outside Canada, so that it can turn the property into a potential merchandising juggernaut.
