Admissions Will Not Ask Questions About Sexual Orientation

To better serve the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community on college campuses, some California state universities are considering putting an optional question on college applications that asks students about their sexual orientation.

USC currently does not plan to include the question on its application form, said Timothy Brunold, dean of admission.

“Part of the fear [for including it] is that for many students who are going through this process, their parents, for example, don’t even know that their son or daughter has a particular identity,” Brunold said. “One of the last things we would want to do would be to ask that student about it specifically, in fear that that student might not be ready to share his or her identity with someone who might be looking at their application.”

Brunold said USC uses the pre-orientation homework to gather that information. On the homework, students can indicate whether or not they want more information on a particular department, such as the LGBT Resource Center.

Why Your Brilliant Child Didn’t Get Into the Ivies

Last Thursday, decisions from top colleges were delivered electronically to stressed-out high school seniors. By early evening, more than 90% of those who had applied to the eight Ivy League schools plus their partners-in-prestige, Stanford and MIT, had received a gently worded “Good luck elsewhere.” Or, even worse, “waitlist status,” which means sending a deposit check to a fourth choice institution, procuring a letter of recommendation from Nelson Mandela and spending the summer in limbo.

These new Ivy rejects are far from slackers. They’re incredible kids with impressive resumes — 2,350+ SATs, straight As in their 16 APs, debate champions, flute soloists and MVPs. Parents who have been dreaming of an Ivy education for their kids since conception are scratching their heads, trying to figure out what went wrong.

So, why didn’t your child get in?

Dan Savage’s TV Moment Continues in MTV Show

http://weblogs.variety.com/bltv/2012/03/mtv-continues-dan-savages-tv-moment.html#ixzz1qaaIN9Lg

A writer and provocateur, Dan Savage has an easy-going, glib manner when the subject is sex advice that’s well suited to TV — and especially engaging college students, as he tours and lectures dispensing much-needed wisdom to the hormonally challenged population.

MTV tries to bottle that in a new series, “Savage U,” premiering on April 3 at 11 p.m. And while Savage’s quick wit, no-nonsense observations and racy ripostes play well, the show proves a little bit too cute for its own good by seeking to create a sort of rom-com-style banter (minus the sex) between its star and his producer, Lauren Hutchinson, who’s basically reduced to following him around saying “Oh no you didn’t!”

Fortunately, the half-hour episodes (MTV’s ordered 12) go down pretty quickly, and to give you an idea of Savage’s approach to sex ed, there’s no way he’d let someone say something as suggestive as “go down pretty quickly” without making a joke about that.

Savage recently hosted the MTV spec “It Gets Better,” a much weightier effort based on his admirable viral video campaign, designed to provide a comforting shoulder to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths.

Sex education: Not just for teens

Often, we learn about the horndogs and the bees in a high school sex-ed class. I fondly remember my gym teacher awkwardly mumbling through diagrams of the reproductive systems with a few dozen pictures of the horrors of herpes thrown in for good measure. The message was clear: Abstinence until death or you will get the clap, you dirty slut! There was no follow-up Q&A session.

That is where esteemed sex columnist and Chicago native Dan Savage and his new MTV series, “Savage U,” come in, loudly, proudly and sheathed in latex. The show, which debuts at 10 p.m. Tuesday, follows Savage as he takes his expertise on the road, visiting college campuses across the U.S. and dispensing sex advice better than anything your 10th-grade gym teacher could diagram on a chalkboard. Savage’s show gives Millennials something we’ve been yearning for since puberty: grown-up sex-ed.

Study of the Day: Women’s Use of Condoms Dwindles in College

PROBLEM: Unprotected sex puts women at greater risk for unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, yet there has been a gap in research involving condom use of women during their college years.

METHODOLOGY: Miriam Hospital researchers led by Jennifer Walsh recruited 279 first-year female college students and asked them to submit monthly reports on their use of condoms. To uncover possible predictors of unsafe behavior, they also included questions about participants’ high school GPA, religious beliefs, parents’ education levels, and whether they had smoked marijuana or engaged in binge drinking during the month before they entered college.

Chlamydia Testing: Few U.S. Women Getting Tested For The STD, CDC Says

CHICAGO, March 13 (Reuters) – Only 38 percent of the 16 million American women aged 15 to 25 who are sexually active were screened for chlamydia in the prior year, putting them at risk for chronic pain, life-threatening pregnancies and infertility, U.S. health experts said on Tuesday.

Chlamydia is the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease in the United States, with 1.3 million new cases reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010.

But because the infection often has no symptoms, the actual rate of new infections may be more than twice that, or nearly 2.8 million new infections each year, Dr. Gail Bolan, the CDC’s director of STD Prevention, told reporters in a conference call from the National STD Prevention Conference in Minneapolis.

Gender-Neutral Housing: No Excuses for UNC-Chapel Hill

Safety for transgender college students needs to be a priority. According to Campus Pride’s 2010 State of Higher Education for LGBT People, less than 7 percent of institutions of higher education have inclusive nondiscrimination polices with regard to gender identity and expression of transgender students, faculty, and staff. More than a third of all transgender students, faculty, and staff fear for their physical safety, and over half attempt to hide their transgender identity to avoid intimidation and harassment on campus.

Stonehill College Student Sues School Over Roommate’s Sexual Romps

Stonehill College officials say the woman who claimed in a federal suit that her roommate’s sexual behavior led to the deterioration of her mental health never brought those allegations up while a student, according to school officials and a document filed in court.

Former Stonehill College student Lindsay Blankmeyer filed a lawsuit against the school in U.S. District Court in Boston Feb. 29, demanding $150,000 in damages, alleging college staff did nothing to help her with her roommate problems. She alleged in her lawsuit that the college violated the Fair Housing Act, state anti-discrimination laws and the federal Rehabilitation Act.

MTV Explores Sex On College Campuses

via TV on HuffingtonPost.com by Crystal Bell on 2/29/12

MTV is premiering its new docu-series “Savage U” on Tuesday, April 3 at 11 p.m. EST.

The series will follow columnist, author, and co-creator of the It Gets Better Project Dan Savage as he travels to college campuses across the country, talking to students and offering them a crash course on relationships, responsibility, sex and love.

As seen in the above trailer, Savage isn’t afraid to tackle the topics that students are too afraid to talk about. From learning how to avoid the or build a committed relationship, to safely navigating online dating and one night stands, to kinks and fetishes, no topic is off-limits and every question is driven by the students themselves.

Each half-hour episode, set at a different college, will feature an open Q&A session in which Savage and his producer Lauren Hutchinson address anonymous questions, as well as one-on-one sessions with Savage for students who are facing deeper issues.

Savage U gives viewers something seldom seen on television before: an honest conversation about sex,” Savage said in a statement. “Sex is usually portrayed as either completely harmless, so everyone should do it, or unspeakably dangerous, so no one should. This is a real discussion about sex — the good, the bad, and the ugly — with all the risks, the rewards, the fun and the heartbreak that comes along with it. By talking candidly, were letting our audience make their own informed choices and feel empowered to seek out what’s right for them.

“Savage U” premieres Tuesday, April 3 at 11 p.m. EST on MTV.
