Variety: It Gets Better Review

“MTV doesn’t always aim very high, so it’s nice when the channel capitalizes on its youth audience to pursue nobler objectives than, say, further enriching the “Jersey Shore” gang. By that measure, it’s hard to think of a better union of network and special than “It Gets Better,” a one-hour version of Dan Savage’s viral campaign — inspired by alarming suicide rates among gay teens — to reassure them there is life, and acceptance, beyond high school. Spec is being simulcast on sister network Logo, and if it helps one kid, MTV has done penance for a multitude of sins.”

Hollywood Reporter: ‘It Gets Better’ Founder Dan Savage: The MTV-Logo Special, How Tim Gunn Surprised Him

Some of us have learned more than we thought we’d ever want to know about sex and relationships from Dan Savage’s syndicated column, Savage Love. And even more people may know him as the man who redefined “Santorum” to the politician’s dismay. But, some people may not know that the bawdy writer and activist is the co-founder of the It Gets Better Project aimed at providing hope for LGBT youth.

The Wrap: Dan Savage Takes ‘It Gets Better’ to MTV — and May Have a Deal for Santorum

Dan Savage has offered hundreds of thousands of words of advice since he began his “Savage Love” column two decades ago. But the most important are these three:

It gets better.

MTV Wants Its Pants Back: Moving From Sexed-Up Reality to Scripted and Sweet

MTV has spent the last two years making grown-ups clutch their pearls: Fans of scripted shows wince at the phenomenal ratings for “Jersey Shore.” Parents groups were horrified by the sexualized “Skins.” And “Teen Mom” has been accused of glamorizing young pregnancy.

MTV unveils its latest shocker tonight — but it’s not shocking in the way you might expect: The new comedy “I Just Want My Pants Back” is a sensitive, scripted show about young, vulnerable New Yorkers trying to find meaningful relationships. Sometimes — brace yourself — it’s kind of sweet.

Dee Rees, Director of Pariah, Interviewed

http://www.laweekly.com/2011-12-29/film-tv/Dee-Rees-Pariah-interview/

One of the biggest success stories of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival was writer-director Dee Rees’ film Pariah, about 17-year-old black lesbian Alike (pronounced Ah-lee-kay, played by Adepero Oduye) and her struggles to forge an identity from the constricting butch/femme palette. Her best friend, Laura (a scene-stealing Pernell Walker), has her back but unintentionally complicates things; Alike’s also caught between a dad who adores her and a mom whose own demons create a volatile household. It’s a sharp, moving, visually gorgeous film, insightfully written and directed by Rees.

Rees spoke with the Weekly about adapting Pariah from her same-titled 2007 short, issues affecting queer youth, the semi-autobiographical elements of the film, and Spike Lee’s role in getting Pariah made.

Young, Gay and Homeless: Fighting for Resources

http://www.npr.org/2011/11/20/142364493/young-gay-and-homeless-fighting-for-resources

A number of studies of homeless youth in big cities put forth a startling statistic: Depending on the study, somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of homeless youths identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

It’s largely because gay youths are more often kicked out of their homes than straight youths. And even if they are not kicked out, they may feel so uncomfortable that they leave.

In New York City, nearly 4,000 young people are homeless every night — many of them gay.

Bisexual Teens at Highest Risk of Bullying and Suicide

http://psychcentral.com/news/2011/11/02/bisexual-teens-at-highest-risk-of-bullying-and-suicide/30961.html

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth and those questioning their sexuality are at greater risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, bullying by their peers and truancy, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Illinois.

The study, published in the October issue of the journal Educational Researcher, also revealed some striking differences among the various groups of sexual minority youth.

The study, based upon anonymous online surveys of more than 13,000 middle and high school students in Dane County, Wis., included a set of eight questions with low-probability responses that were used to screen out mischievous responders, according to researchers.

‘Real World’ Alum Makes Good with MTV Doc About ‘Coming Out’

Those who say breaking up is hard to do have obviously never tried coming out. Even with the government relaxing on policies like “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and influential states such as New York legalizing same-sex marriage, being young and gay in America remains far from easy.

Just ask 24-year-old Preston Charles, a former cast member on MTV’s “Real World: Back to New Orleans.” The Michigan native and current New York resident came out in high school, and consequently battled dual prejudices toward his race (Charles is black) and sexuality. As a result, he knows first-hand that the struggle for widespread tolerance is an ongoing one.

It’s why Charles and co-creator Shannon Mechutan developed the concept for “Coming Out,” a one-hour documentary that airs tonight on MTV at 7/6c as part of National Coming Out Day. The special follows 21-year-old Californian lesbian Rachael and 20-year-old Ohio State rugby player Nevin as they open up about their sexual orientation to friends, family and peers.

Charles, who also serves as one of the “Coming Out” producers alongside “Bully Project” director Lee Hirsch, spoke with XfinityTV.com about using “Real World” notoriety for good, relating to Rachael and Nevin and refusing to get complacent about campaigning for equal rights and acceptance.
