New Breed of Athletes Seeking Edge Through Food

To a new breed of athlete, nutrition is the final frontier. To them, food is the new drug of choice.

“There are three big benefits,” said Dave Ellis, a renowned sports dietitian. “There’s less down time. People don’t get ill as often or as easily. Those missed man days are huge setbacks to teams.

“The next big thing is energy. Athletes who don’t know what they’re doing with their diets can come to work and put in a mediocre day. Physically and mentally, their coach-ability is down. Too many of those days, and you lose.”

The last component is recovery, and Hill can attest to the recuperating powers of proper nutrition. The Suns star is currently mocking his age (38), having missed only three games in his past three years.

Kids Who Play Competitive Sports Need Nutritious Food Before Games

A number of you have children in travel baseball, softball, soccer and hockey. Games are at all times of the day. You usually have one or two games in the morning followed by one or two at night. What we’ve done for away games is a training table lunch.

Usually, the breakfast room is available and we go to the local grocery store and purchase turkey, bread, fruit, salad, water and vegetables for the team and parents.

You save money by not going to a restaurant and we’ve found the team plays better for afternoon games because the kids aren’t bogged down with heavy food.

You might want to keep that in mind the weekend of June 18-19. That is the day of soccer tryouts and some kids will try out for multiple teams. You want to look your best because tryout day is usually hot and draining and nutrition is important.

White House Beefs Up Online Rapid Response

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has created and staffed a new position tucked inside their communications shop for helping coordinate rapid response to unfavorable stories and fostering and improving relations with the progressive online community.

“This week, Jesse Lee will move from the new media department into a role in the communications department as Director of Progressive Media & Online Response,” read an internal memo from Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer, provided to The Huffington Post. “For the last two years, Jesse has often worn two hats working in new media and serving as the White House’s liaison with the progressive media and online community. Starting this week, Jesse will take on the second role full time working on outreach, strategy and response.”

The post is a new one for this White House. Rapid response has been the purview of the Democratic National Committee (and will continue to be). Lee’s hire, however, suggests that a portion of it will now be handled from within the administration. It also signals that the White House will be adopting a more aggressive engagement in the online world in the months ahead.

‘Coming Out’: Gay Teenagers, in Their Own Words

The New York Times embarked on the project “Coming Out,” which begins Monday, as an effort to better understand this generation’s realities and expectations, and to give teenagers their own voice in this conversation.

The suicide of Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University freshman who jumped from the George Washington Bridge last year after discovering that his roommate had secretly streamed Mr. Clementi’s romantic interlude with another man on the Internet, captured world-wide attention. In the wake of his death, stories of gay youths being bullied and taking their own lives proliferated.

The subsequent outpouring of concern from parents, educators and those who had survived bullying themselves inspired “It Gets Better,” a campaign led by the columnist and author Dan Savage in which thousands of lesbian and gay adults shared their stories to assure all teenagers that society has a place for them.

The Power Within: Anti-Bullying Comic Book Raising Funds To Spread Positive Message

“Sometimes you have to be your own hero.” Writer Charles “Zan” Christensen and artist Mark Brill have joined forces to raise funds on their Kickstarter page to publish a comic book that tackles the subject of teen bullying. The Power Within tells the story of introverted high school student Shannon who, when bullied on at school, is told by his dad and his teachers that the other kids wouldn’t tease him if he just “fit in” more.
Faced with all this, Shannon has created a super-powered alter ego that he can escape into whenever he’s in a bad situation. Pretending he’s a powerful hero helps him stand up for himself. But will the power within be enough to save him? The story sends an inspirational message that “you can summon the power inside you and live through your toughest challenges,” and now that message can be shared with LGBT youth through the large run print of the book.
